Growth of live stock around the world, excessive
utilization of natural resources by them, extensive damage caused to
environment with more and more chemical experiments, bringing the far end
global places nearer by various transport means, etc. have been instrumental in
multiplication of diseases and their spread worldwide.  These have, however, also the other way
impact to improve the skills due to which people tend to strive constantly looking
for remedial measures.  Systems have been
evolved to cure diseases by the mankind in various times and different regions
which are now being used globally.  One
of such systems is Ayurveda which has its roots in India.  The system has capability to eradicate many fatal
diseases, like hypertension, diabetes and even some kinds of cancer, etc.  In Ayurveda, herbs, shrubs, etc. are utilized
for medicinal use to cure diseases.

The main
biomedical actions of the roots includes: antispasmodic
(agents that suppresses muscle spasms), cardiodepressant
(agent that depresses the rate or force of contractions of the heart) , hypnotic (
sleep inducing drug), anticholinergic (substance that blocks the
neurotransmitter acetocholine in the CNS and PNS), analgesic(painkiller), carminative(drug that relieves flatulence), hypotensive(lowering the blood pressure), nervine(used to calm the nerves), sedative and vasodilatory (dilation of blood vessels). The Roots contains many alkaloids that directly
act on the secretory vesicles of the CNS and are used for treating mild to
moderate hypertension, physical or emotional  stress, insomnia, sexual aggression, cardiac oedema and other diseases.

In Ayurveda
, Sarpagandha is utilised in
treatment of high blood pressure, insomnia, asthma, acute stomach ache and
painful delivery and for mental illness (neuropsychiatric disorders, psychosis, schizophrenia). The herb is also
used to cure for snake-bite, and insect stings.

Rauwofia serpentina has been a subject matter of research for
years together and several researchers have explored this plant due to its phytochemical properties..

R.serpentina root contains about 0.7-3.0% of total
alkaloids .

Under physical or emotional stress various
neurotransmitters like dopamine, catecholamines are released in the blood
stream which causes constriction of blood vessels and leads to high blood pressure
or hypertension. Reserpine  on binding to
Vesicular monamine transporters transport protein integrated into the
membrane of synaptic vesicles of presynaptic neurons decreases the release of
these neurotransmitters from the presynaptic neurons and thus help in
controlling the blood vessels constriction and thus high blood pressure.

Sarpgandha definitely lowers blood pressure; it dilates the  blood vessel and has sedative and hypotensive
effects. But it also causes many side effects; for example, excess usage
of this causes breast cancer, muscles relaxation, decrease of fertility,
lowering of male hormones, abnormal heart rhythm, acidosis and shock. It must
be avoided in depression, ulcers, and ulcerative colitis.
